This year marks Xbox's 25th anniversary, but the mood heading in is far from celebratory. Phil Spencer left in February, and new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has pledged a "renewed commitment to Xbox" — this showcase is supposed to be the first concrete sign of what that means. Microsoft spent years buying up a significant chunk of the games industry and has little to show for it so far: widespread layoffs, studio closures, and cancelled projects have defined the era more than any game releases.

The company is also under sustained pressure from the BDS movement over its partnership with the Israeli military, a relationship that has drawn public scrutiny, internal protests, and executive firings. That backdrop makes this showcase unusually high-stakes — Microsoft needs to demonstrate it has a coherent direction, not just a new org chart.
