Ball x Pit final free update The Naturalist drops August 6 with two new characters and 11 new balls

Ball x Pit is getting its final free update — The Naturalist — on August 6 for PS5. The developers say they simply couldn't stop making content after launch, so everything added post-release has been free, and this is the last of it.

The update adds two new playable characters with contrasting playstyles. The Ballbearer doubles your ball slots for maximum firepower but strips out all passive item slots entirely. The Hoary Hoarder flips that — only two ball slots, but twice the passive slots, leaning hard into item Evolutions. Alongside those characters come 11 new balls, including Lightning Bug, which spawns a firefly on every bounce that seeks out the strongest enemy and zaps nearby targets; Mosquito Kingdom, which builds a swarm that hunts the weakest enemy for 100–150 damage per hit and heals you on a killing blow; Drill, which pierces through enemies from behind; Flesh, which starts at half damage but accelerates with each bounce; and Armageddon, which marks a target on first hit then rains flaming meteors across a three-tile radius. Five new passives round out the content, including Platinum Dumbbell, which boosts damage until a ball hits the back wall; Inglorious Hammer, which fires balls at a random enemy after a wall bounce for reduced damage; and Remote Detonator, which spawns a level 1 Bomb Ball every time an enemy dies. The team is holding back a few more surprises beyond what's been revealed.

Ball x Pit is a roguelite pinball-style game where players build combinations of balls and passive items across runs. The studio's decision to keep pushing free content updates after launch — driven by leftover ideas and community enthusiasm — is the kind of post-launch support that tends to build lasting goodwill, especially in a genre where build variety is the main draw. Watching the community discover new ball synergies after each update has clearly been a motivating factor for the team.

The Naturalist update lands August 6 on PS5. The developers signed off with a "…maybe" on whether this is truly the last update, so the door isn't completely shut — but for now, this is the final planned free content drop.
