Mintrocket launched Dave the Diver: In the Jungle today — the biggest DLC the game has seen yet. It's available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox on PC as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. To mark the occasion, Mintrocket and The Asylum — the studio behind the Sharknado franchise and Meth Gator — put together an official live-action short film.
The film runs about 10 minutes and was written and directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, who helmed all six Sharknado movies and has a Sharknado Origins prequel in the pipeline. The story follows Dave and crew fighting Sulong, a massive crocodile that's one of the expansion's bosses. Steven Tulumello plays Dave, with Steve Falcone as Cobra, Kofi Baffour as Bancho, Von Antonio as Dr. Bacon, Vivian True as Muna, and G. Anthony Joseph as Chief Panutah. True to Asylum form, the production values are deliberately low-budget and cheesy — and the credits roll over the song Meth Gator, which Ferrante co-wrote for the Asylum film of the same name.
In the Jungle costs $10 and delivers over 10 hours of new story and gameplay. Dave and the gang head to a remote jungle region with Dr. Bacon, explore a freshwater ecosystem, build relationships with local villagers, and run the Bancho Grill — a new spin on the restaurant management side of the game. Mintrocket head Jaeho Hwang says the team never treated this as a simple DLC: he and the game design lead traveled across Southeast Asia during development, and Hwang personally spent two weeks in Indonesia researching local ingredients and food culture. The expansion unlocks after the main story, though players can jump in directly if they prefer.
Reception to the short film has been warm, with one notable exception: PC Gamer took what they called psychic damage from Bancho's Party City glued-on beard, and issued a direct warning to Ferrante not to disrespect the character again. Whether Mintrocket has more expansions planned after this one hasn't been announced.
