Pokémon Champions – the new Switch and mobile battle simulator – is rolling out Mega Evolutions from Pokémon Legends: Z-A in waves, and each one is finally getting an ability. Since Z-A, like Legends: Arceus before it, had no ability system at all, Champions is the first place these Mega forms actually interact with passive perks.
Two waves are confirmed so far, with details via Serebii. Mega Dragonite takes its base form's hidden ability Multiscale, cutting incoming damage at full HP. Mega Meganium gets a brand-new ability called Mega Sol, which lets it act as if harsh sunlight is always active for itself alone — Solar Beam fires without a charge turn, and it doesn't take the usual fire-type damage penalty. Mega Feraligatr gets Dragonize, converting all normal-type moves to dragon-type and adding a 20% power boost on top; since Mega Feraligatr is already water/dragon, those moves also get a STAB bonus, making powerful normal-type attacks hit extremely hard. Mega Froslass gets Snow Warning, summoning a five-turn snowstorm on entry and boosting ice-type defense across the board. Mega Emboar gets Mold Breaker, bypassing enemy abilities that would cause moves to miss or be nullified. Mega Chesnaught promotes its line's Hidden Ability Bulletproof to primary, blocking ball and bomb moves including Aura Sphere and Beak Blast. Mega Delphox gets Levitate — fitting, since it now rides a witch's broom — making it immune to ground-type attacks and removing one of its fire-type weaknesses. Mega Greninja gets Protean, shifting its type to match whatever move it just used, opening up creative defensive plays if you sequence attacks carefully.
Legends: Z-A introduced just under 50 new Mega Evolutions across the base game and the Mega Dimension DLC. Champions is intended to be the main competitive Pokémon platform going forward, so getting these forms battle-ready with proper abilities matters for the long-term metagame. The second wave arrived with the new season following the mobile launch on June 17.
More Mega abilities are still coming as Champions continues its rollout. The full list is being tracked on Serebii as each wave drops.
