Bungie co-founder Jason Jones — the mind behind Halo and the director of Destiny — has opened a new Los Angeles studio called Stone Kite alongside Margaret Stohl, author of Beautiful Creatures and a writer on Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate. Their first project, One Zero One, is set in a future where humanity is up against rogue AI-driven robotic soldiers, and it launches today with Issue 1 of a four-part limited comic series.
One Zero One is designed from the ground up as a multimedia universe. New comic issues will roll out through early 2027, with prose, audio, and screen projects expanding the world throughout the year. Issue 1 already includes never-before-seen excerpts from Jones's manuscript. The creative team is stacked: screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box, Shadow and Bone), comic writer and screenwriter Christina Strain (Shadow and Bone, The Magicians), character designer Kris Anka (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), and artists Dan Panosian, Ramón Pérez, Alitha Martinez, Raúl Allén, and Hyeonjin Kim. Stohl describes the studio's approach as bringing creators from different disciplines into the room from day one rather than building in one medium and adapting outward. Jones, for his part, says Stohl was the first person to believe he could write a book and the first to read it.
Stone Kite's cross-medium ambitions echo what Reflector Entertainment attempted with its Unknown 9 universe — a transmedia franchise built around games, books, and more. That project stalled after Unknown 9: Awakening underperformed commercially, leading to layoffs. Jones carries serious industry weight as a Bungie co-founder, but translating that into a successful new IP across multiple mediums is a different challenge entirely.
Whether Stone Kite can sustain the momentum across comics, prose, audio, and eventually screen remains to be seen. The first issue of One Zero One is available to read now, giving audiences an early look at the world Jones and Stohl have been building.
