Mortal Kombat 2 and 10 more films to stream this weekend

This weekend's streaming slate covers a lot of ground — a video game sequel, an anime take on Shakespeare, Mexico's first stop-motion feature, and the conclusion of a horror trilogy. Mortal Kombat 2 hits VOD while Netflix, Starz, Shudder, and HBO Max all get notable new titles.

Netflix leads with two very different films. Scarlet is Mamoru Hosoda's — the director behind Mirai and Belle — anime reimagining of Hamlet. Princess Scarlet (Mana Ashida), from 16th-century Denmark, travels through time and space to avenge her murdered father. Poisoned by her uncle, she wakes up in the underworld and meets Hijiri (Masaki Okada), a paramedic from the present day. Runtime is 1h 51m. Also on Netflix is I Am Frankelda, a dark animated musical and Mexico's first stop-motion feature film, directed by Arturo and Roy Ambriz. It follows an author who discovers her fictional characters are alive in a parallel realm and has to go on a quest to save them — runtime 1h 43m.

Starz brings The Strangers – Chapter 3, the final entry in the horror trilogy. Maya (Madelaine Petsch) has survived multiple attacks and killed one of the masked murderers, and now she's being recruited to replace the woman she killed — all while the local sheriff works to cover up the group's crimes. On Shudder, Find Your Friends — directed by Izabel Pakzad and starring Helena Howard, Bella Thorne, and Zión Morales — follows college friends on a girls' trip to Joshua Tree that goes sideways fast. HBO Max adds They Will Kill You, with Zazie Beetz as a former convict who takes a maid job at a luxury New York high-rise where the residents demand human sacrifices.

Mortal Kombat 2 is available on VOD now for anyone who missed it in theaters. Between the Hosoda anime, the stop-motion musical, and two solid horror picks, there's enough variety this weekend to fill a double feature or two.
