Dad salvages dead RTX 3070 with a capacitor pulled from an old radio

A Serbian Redditor's dad fixed a dead RTX 3070 by harvesting a capacitor from an old radio and soldering it onto the GPU, saving around $115 in the process. The repair surfaced on the SerbiaGaming subreddit and was picked up by Tom's Hardware.

The broken capacitor was swapped out for the radio part, which works fine electrically but is bulkier than the original — so it now hangs visibly off the side of the card. The dad also replaced the thermal paste with one rated for high-voltage lines. Before the repair, the GPU was hitting above 100 °C under stress and over 80 °C at idle. After the fix, user External_Length_8877 reports a maximum of 80 °C on the GPU and 75 °C on the CPU under full load while running Spider-Man on ultra settings with up to 99% GPU and CPU utilization. The original poster says it "runs better than before the repair."

The RTX 3070 is a mid-to-high-end Ampere-generation card from Nvidia, released back in 2020 — still capable hardware worth keeping alive, especially as GPU prices have climbed during the ongoing memory crisis. DIY GPU repair is a niche skill, but stories like this one are becoming more common as people look for alternatives to expensive replacements or professional service.

External_Length_8877 calls it a "temporary solution" while hunting for a capacitor that matches the original's exact dimensions. For now, though, the card runs Spider-Man on ultra — which is more than most broken GPUs can say.
