Duncan Jones on Rogue Trooper: no franchise plans, just a standalone animated film

Duncan Jones — director of Moon and Warcraft — has opened up about his animated adaptation of Rogue Trooper, the 1981 2000 AD comic by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. He spoke to Polygon at the Annecy Festival, where the project was being presented.

Jones wrote, directed, and independently produced the film, which follows a genetically engineered soldier called 19, voiced by Aneurin Barnard. Set on the toxic planet Nu-Earth, where the Norts and Southers fight an endless war, 19 carries the uploaded consciousnesses of his fallen squadmates stored in chips on his gear. Jones says he kept the worldbuilding deliberately light — he wants audiences to fill in the blanks rather than sit through heavy exposition. On tone, he was equally direct: "I wanted my script to be funny, a little gory, and have a little bit of political subtext without it getting in the way, just being as raw as the comic book itself."

After Warcraft's troubled 2016 release — a film that underperformed critically and commercially in Western markets despite strong numbers in China — Jones is not thinking about sequels or franchise-building this time. "I got burned so badly on Warcraft I'm not even thinking about sequels," he said. "If I can make this movie work as a standalone, that would be wonderful." His bigger ambition is to open the door for other 2000 AD adaptations: the British anthology comic has had limited screen success beyond the two Judge Dredd films in 1995 and 2012, and Jones says there are directors already keen to tackle its other characters.

Jones described 2000 AD as "incredible partners" who were fully supportive of his creative vision, and he's clearly hoping Rogue Trooper can do for the publisher what a successful standalone film rarely manages — prove there's an audience without needing to promise a cinematic universe first.
