EVE Vanguard Relaunches as Operation Avalon With Tighter Extraction Shooter Focus

EVE Vanguard — Fenris Creations' FPS set in the EVE Online universe — just launched its latest build, Operation Avalon, in a closed playtest. Game director Scott Davis and creative lead Jamie Stanton confirmed the big milestone: Vanguard is targeting a 24/7 live connection to EVE Online by the end of this year.

Operation Avalon drops the earlier hesitation around the extraction shooter label and leans into it fully. You beam down to a planet in a clone body, scavenge resources, and extract before other players or Mordu's Legion NPCs end your run. Death means losing everything your clone was carrying — no exceptions. The new map is handcrafted with randomized elements, and points of interest are tiered by NPC difficulty and loot quality, so lower-risk areas exist for players still learning the ropes. High-value zones like the Command Block in the northwest corner are locked behind keycards and guarded by elite enemies that demand serious gear and coordination. Even looting a container carries tension — it reveals items one at a time while you stand completely exposed.

Vanguard has been through several iterations since it first appeared as a tech demo concept within EVE Online's ecosystem. Fenris Creations has been working to define exactly what role ground combat plays in a universe historically dominated by spaceship warfare, and Operation Avalon is the clearest answer yet: a persistent extraction loop where successful runs feed back into EVE's broader economy through resources and blueprints. The EVE Online connection — where player actions in Vanguard are meant to influence the wider sandbox — has always been the game's most ambitious promise, and the end-of-year integration target makes that feel more concrete than ever.

The closed playtest format means wider player access is still pending, but the live EVE Online integration deadline gives the community a concrete timeline to watch. If Fenris hits that target, Vanguard stops being a standalone experiment and becomes a genuine extension of one of gaming's longest-running persistent universes.
