Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer picks independence as the Mojave's best ending

Josh Sawyer, the director of Fallout: New Vegas, has shared his personal pick for the game's best ending — and it's an independent New Vegas, not a win for the NCR, Caesar's Legion, or Mr. House.

In an interview on The Examined Game with Steven Lake, Sawyer explained why he can't fully get behind any of the other factions. Caesar and Mr. House both represent handing power to a single dangerous individual, which he finds hard to stomach. The NCR, despite having genuinely virtuous people fighting for it, is openly imperialistic — and Sawyer says it's difficult to square that and still walk away feeling good about backing them. Independence, by contrast, is messy and untested: "I know it's going to be dysfunctional, I know it's going to be bureaucratic, I know there's going to be corruption — but also it hasn't been tried yet, right? Like we haven't organized this yet, so let's give it a try." Obsidian deliberately built those drawbacks into the independence ending, making sure it wasn't a clean victory either, just the least compromised of four bad options.

Fallout: New Vegas launched in 2010 and remains one of the most acclaimed entries in the series, largely because of exactly this kind of moral ambiguity — no faction is clean, no ending is triumphant, and the Mojave Wasteland grinds everyone down eventually. Sawyer has long been associated with that design philosophy, and his comments track with how the game was built: every major choice comes with a cost, and the writing goes out of its way to complicate any sense of a "right" answer.

The interview lands at an awkward moment for Sawyer and Obsidian. Reports suggest he is heading up a new Fallout project at the studio, which would be a significant return to the series — but those reports emerged alongside major Xbox layoffs that cut roughly 25% of Obsidian's workforce and cancelled several projects, including an Avowed sequel. Whether that new Fallout game survives the cuts remains unclear.
