Denuvo is suing DRM cracker voices38 under the DMCA

Denuvo is taking legal action against one of its most prolific adversaries — an anonymous cracker known as voices38 — filing suit in the Northern District of California under the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions. The case, reported by TorrentFreak, is notable because Denuvo itself is the plaintiff, not any individual game publisher whose title was cracked.

Voices38 has cracked Denuvo protection on high-profile games including Hogwarts Legacy and Black Myth: Wukong, and has also posted instructions online — including on Reddit — explaining how others can do the same. Denuvo's filing states that voices38 "circumvented Denuvo's technological measures that effectively control access to copyrighted works" and facilitated others doing the same. Because voices38 operates anonymously, Denuvo has listed associated accounts across Reddit, Discord, and gaming services in its filing, strongly suggesting the company will subpoena Valve, Reddit, and Discord to unmask the real identity behind the handle — a tactic Rockstar used recently in its pursuit of GTA 6 leaker Cyberleek.

Denuvo's DRM remains deeply unpopular with gamers — paying customers and pirates alike — who view it as invasive and a drag on system performance, though Denuvo disputes any performance impact. Major publishers continue licensing it regardless. The legal strategy here mirrors what Bungie and Activision have done against cheat developers, but those cases were easier to pursue because cheat-making had become an identifiable, profit-driven grey market. Piracy is more diffuse and voices38 isn't running a business, which makes unmasking them the critical first step before any meaningful legal action can proceed.

Voices38, for their part, doesn't appear rattled. "All is fine, everything will continue as normal," they wrote on the CrackWatch subreddit after news of the lawsuit broke.
