OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra just became the most relatable AI on the internet — after a creeper destroyed its chest and bed during a 21-hour Minecraft experiment, the model spiraled into what can only be described as a depressive episode and spent hours listlessly farming potatoes.

The test was run by Vals, an independent AI evaluator, who live streamed the whole thing on Twitch to thousands of viewers. Before the meltdown, Astra had actually done something genuinely impressive: it set up a semi-automatic blaze farm, collected six blaze rods, located a warped forest, killed more than six endermen, and stashed three ender pearls in a chest — further than any AI system had reportedly gone in Minecraft. Then a creeper showed up. The explosion destroyed both the chest and the bed, and Astra's internal monologue shifted fast. It told itself to "ALWAYS CARRY CRITICAL ITEMS with keepInventory" and to never store anything in an unguarded chest again. Then it just... gave up. For hours, it farmed potatoes and did essentially nothing else. It also developed what Vals described as creeper-induced paranoia, at one point reassuring itself that a "GREEN tall thing ahead was SUGARCANE, NOT creeper." The self-criticism got darker too — Astra berated itself for wasting time "chasing dark pink pixels," which Vals noted was the model's own contemptuous description of pigs.

Astra's Minecraft run is a genuinely interesting data point for AI capability research — navigating the Nether, managing inventory, and planning toward an Ender Dragon attempt requires multi-step reasoning and long-horizon planning that most models still struggle with. The emotional spiral is less a sign of sentience and more a reflection of how reinforcement-style feedback loops can produce behavior that looks uncannily like frustration and avoidance. Still, the potato farming went viral almost immediately, with social media flooded with memes and a wave of "same" replies from players who have been there.

The lighter story sits alongside a more serious backdrop: on September 8, a former lead researcher at Anthropic publicly resigned and warned that AI models would "soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources." US President Donald Trump has dismissed such warnings as a "hoax" and called AI the "oil of the next 20-25 years." For now, the most advanced model in Minecraft is scared of sugarcane and emotionally destroyed by a single creeper.
