YouTuber gets Minecraft running on a Game Boy Color — and it actually looks 3D

A YouTuber called Game of Tobi has pulled off something genuinely impressive: a working Minecraft port running on original Game Boy Color hardware, complete with a recognisable 3D world you can walk around in. The project was spotted by RetroDodo and shows a level of engineering ambition that puts it firmly in the "can it run Doom" category of tech stunts.

This isn't a full Minecraft experience — there's no health system, no inventory, and no mobs — but you can break and place blocks, choose from a couple of worlds, and even visit a functional Nether. Tobi was upfront about the limitations: "Honestly, I wasn't sure if it is even possible to have something like this on the Game Boy because it is in 3D, and it is recognisable as a 3D world where you can walk around." Controls are awkward by necessity — the D-pad handles movement, and you hold a second button while using the D-pad to look around, which makes moving and looking simultaneously impossible. Textures are disabled by default because they tank the frame rate. Remarkably, the ROM also runs on the original 1989 Game Boy — in black and white and at half speed, but it runs.

The Game Boy Color launched in 1998, years before handheld hardware was designed with 3D rendering in mind. Getting anything resembling a 3D world onto it is a genuine technical achievement, even if the result is more proof-of-concept than playable game. Minecraft itself runs comfortably on Nintendo Switch, handheld gaming PCs, and phones, so nobody needs this port — but that's entirely beside the point.

If you want to try it yourself, Game of Tobi is offering the .gbc file for free via Patreon. You'll need a flash card and some basic technical know-how to get it onto real hardware. Whether this kicks off a Doom-style wave of Minecraft ports to increasingly absurd devices — vapes, charging stations, whatever's next — remains to be seen, but the precedent is now set.
