Matthew Rhys voices a dwarf warrior in Golden Axe, an animated Paramount+ comedy based on the classic Sega game

Fresh off a record-breaking night at the Emmys, Matthew Rhys has another project landing this week — Golden Axe, an animated comedy series now streaming on Paramount+. All 10 episodes are available now.

Rhys voices Gilius Thunderhead, the dwarf warrior from Sega's original 1989 beat-'em-up. The show follows Gilius, Ax Battler, and sorceress Tyris Flare as they reunite to stop the evil giant Death Adder — who, per the show's premise, just won't stay dead. Complicating the quest is Hampton Squib, an overconfident rookie adventurer whose heroic ambitions wildly outpace his actual skills. The cast includes Danny Pudi (Community, Mythic Quest), Liam McIntyre (who played JD Fenix in Gears of War 4), Lisa Gilroy as Tyris, and Cart Tart voicing a humanoid panther.

Golden Axe the game was a landmark Sega arcade and Mega Drive title — a side-scrolling co-op brawler that became one of the defining games of the late '80s and early '90s. Rhys, meanwhile, just made Emmy history by becoming the first man to win two lead acting Emmys in a single night, taking home awards for comedy series Widow's Bay and limited series The Beast in Me. Combined with his 2018 drama win for The Americans, he's now the only person to hold lead actor Emmys across all three major TV genres.
