Baldur's Gate 3 Act Two Expansion mod hits beta, adds a new region between acts two and three

Nearly two years after development began, modder SquallyDaBeanz has released the Act Two Expansion for Baldur's Gate 3 in beta. The mod slots a brand-new region — The Chionthar Wilds — into the gap between BG3's second and third acts, giving players something substantial to do after lifting the Shadow Curse.

The Chionthar Wilds is designed to be comparable in scope to act one's Wilderness area, with quests, dungeons, and combat tuned for parties at levels eight through ten. The story has your group crossing the Chionthar River and fighting the Absolute's army at Rivington before heading into act three. New NPCs, custom creatures, and original missions fill out the region, though the modder is upfront that the experience is rough around the edges — subtitled-only dialogue, no voice acting planned for now, and some known softlock bugs that can block the transition to act three. SquallyDaBeanz recommends saving frequently and having a way to skip to act three as a backup if the finale breaks. The mod supports multiplayer as long as every player has it installed with matching files.

Baldur's Gate 3 launched in full in August 2023 after an early access period, and Larian Studios has since wrapped up its official post-launch support. That's left the door wide open for the modding community, and the game's robust mod support — including official Larian tooling — has encouraged increasingly ambitious projects. An expansion-sized custom campaign filling a narrative gap in the main story is exactly the kind of thing the community has been building toward.

A 1.0 release is already being planned, with SquallyDaBeanz listing improved writing and dialogue, more background- and skill-specific lines, and a mechanical overhaul of boss encounters as targets.
