Former Assassin's Creed dev's ghost-hunting horror Sisters of Solitude uses an instant camera to catch convent killers

Jesse Malcolm Sweet — cinematic director on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, lead cinematic consultant on XCOM: The Bureau, and a Ubisoft Montreal director on Assassin's Creed Unity and the long-delayed 1666: Amsterdam — is now making Sisters of Solitude, a solo horror mystery about four nuns who murdered their Mother Superior. The game is due out this year and is already up on Steam.

Sisters of Solitude is a top-down 8-bit pixel art game set inside a haunted convent. Players explore locations ranging from a desecrated chapel and greenhouse to a cemetery and old theatre, digging through diaries and finding secret passages. The ghosts of the four killer nuns are still on the premises, and the Steam page warns you may need to perform the very rituals that trapped them there in the first place. Your toolkit sits along the left-hand margin of the screen: an electromagnetic field detector for sniffing out hidden documents and spirits, an instant camera that captures spectral imprints, and a tape deck that records a room's silence and plays it back amplified so you can catch any ghostly whispering.

Sweet's path to a convent horror game is a genuinely odd one. After leaving Ubisoft he spent four years as artistic director at Kino Montreal, a filmmaking non-profit, and Sisters of Solitude was directly inspired by real visits to abandoned convents with a camera crew. That film background shows in the gadget design — the tape deck and instant camera feel lifted straight from a Paranormal Activity-style forensic toolkit rather than a standard video game inventory. The pixel art aesthetic is a sharp departure from his previous work in cinematic AAA production, but there's a faint thread back to 1666: Amsterdam, which also leaned into occult and historical mystery.

Sisters of Solitude has no firm release date beyond 2025. Players already hungry for convent murder mysteries can check out Misericorde, which is available now and well-regarded in the niche.
