Game of Thrones RTS War for Westeros delayed to early 2027

War for Westeros, the real-time strategy game set in the Game of Thrones universe, has slipped from its 2026 release window to early 2027. Developer Playside confirmed the delay in a blog post, citing the need for more time to hit the quality bar they're aiming for.

In the post, Playside said: "We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans. This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal." The studio also acknowledged the wait has been long and thanked players for their patience. War for Westeros lets you command one of three iconic Houses — Stark, Targaryen, or Lannister — or play as the Night King, all with the goal of conquering the Seven Kingdoms. The game includes both a single-player campaign and multiplayer, and Playside has described their design goal as making players feel like they're actually playing through the TV show.

War for Westeros was announced in 2025 and sits within a broader push by Warner Bros. Discovery to build out its major IP in gaming. The company has identified Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, and DC as its four flagship gaming franchises going forward — a strategy that carries extra weight given Warner Bros. Discovery is currently in the process of being acquired by Paramount in a deal valued at over $100 billion. How that acquisition reshapes the studio's gaming priorities remains to be seen, but for now the Game of Thrones brand is clearly a priority.

No specific early 2027 date has been given yet. With the delay now public, the community will be watching for a proper release window and, hopefully, more gameplay footage to justify the wait.
