Bungie has revealed Sponsored Survival, Marathon's first PvP-lite experimental mode, set to launch during the opening week of season 2. It runs alongside Marathon's free week, from June 2 to June 9.
In Sponsored Survival, only one squad — or a solo player — drops into season 2's new Night Marsh map. Loadouts are locked to sponsored kit, and for the first stretch of the match you're only fighting UESC bots and some new enemies lurking in the shadows — no other players. That changes after a certain point, when Rooks, Marathon's late-joining zero-stake players, start backfilling into the map and ratcheting up the tension. Depending on who shows up, your squad might pick up a few robot auxiliaries, or get hunted through the dark by players with nothing to lose. The match runs 18 minutes, and there's only one exfil — it opens at the very end, funneling everyone to the same spot. "Will you negotiate a temporary truce and exfil as one, or turn your weapons on each other in the dead of night?" Bungie asks. The studio describes it as an asymmetrical mode that "takes the heat off of the lone crew for the first few minutes of the match, while also keeping some of the fun, social unpredictability that Rooks bring to runs."
Bungie flagged back in May that it would experiment with PvE and PvE-adjacent offerings as Marathon seasons progress, aiming to give players a version of the game that doesn't demand constant sweat. Sponsored Survival is the first concrete result of that promise. A fully PvE mode is also planned for the latter half of season 2.
The obvious tension here is whether Rooks will simply use their late entry to prey on squads who spent the whole match hoarding the map's best loot. If that becomes the norm, the mode's relaxed opening will just be a delayed ambush. Either way, the answer arrives June 2.
