Marathon delays September update to December, adds permanent PvE mode in Symbiosis

Bungie have pushed Marathon's next major update from September 22nd to December 8th, rebranding it as Symbiosis and expanding its scope significantly. The studio is also dropping its fixed seasonal update schedule in favor of longer development windows.

Symbiosis brings a permanent PvE mode, a new Runner shell, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, an experimental team deathmatch mode, and improved new player onboarding. Before that, a smaller update lands October 6th — it resets progression and the in-game economy, refreshes rewards, and tidies up the live game. Bungie framed the October drop as a bridge to keep things moving while the team focuses on December and a further update planned for March. "Instead of tying major updates to fixed seasonal deadlines, we're giving the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before they are released," the studio wrote in its blog post.

The delay is a direct response to player feedback since Marathon's launch. Bungie acknowledged the game needs more depth, variety, stronger progression, and better long-term hooks — and said addressing that requires changing both what they're building and how they ship it. The promo art for Symbiosis's PvE mode hints at bug-stomping combat that looks vaguely reminiscent of Helldivers 2. Marathon is now Bungie's sole live-service focus after Destiny 2 effectively wound down in June, making the stakes for getting this right considerably higher.

Bungie called Symbiosis "the first major step in Marathon's next chapter" and insists December is only the beginning of their plans. Whether the community — which has been vocal about the game's shortcomings — sticks around long enough to see those plans through is the real question hanging over the December 8th date.
