Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler Leaves Bungie Four Months After Launch

Joe Ziegler, game director of Marathon, has left Bungie effective immediately — just four months after the game launched. Del Chafe III, previously assistant game director, steps up to lead alongside creative director Julia Nardin.

Ziegler announced the departure himself on X, writing that he'll be "heading to something new, somewhere else" and promised to share details soon. He thanked the community for supporting the game and encouraged players to follow him to whatever comes next. Chafe and Nardin are described by Bungie as the pair who will "guide Marathon into the next chapter with an even better and brighter future." The studio is currently rolling out significant changes to the game, including a new PvE mode called Vault Breaker, which debuts temporarily next week before a full rollout in season 3.

Ziegler only joined Bungie in 2022 and took over as Marathon's director two years ago, making his exit feel abrupt even by live-service standards. Marathon has struggled to build a stable player base since launch — Steam concurrent numbers are well below what Destiny 2 was pulling even during its roughest periods. With Bungie's studio headcount already reduced and no other major releases on the horizon, Marathon is effectively the studio's lifeline. Ziegler isn't the only high-profile exit recently either: design lead Lars Bakken, a Bungie veteran of more than 20 years, left in June and has since described himself as retired from the games industry entirely.

The timing is about as bad as it gets for a game still trying to find its footing. Leadership instability at this stage risks accelerating the perception of a studio in freefall, which makes the already difficult task of turning Marathon around even harder. Whether Chafe and Nardin can steady the ship — and whether Vault Breaker gives the game the momentum it needs — will become clear over the next few months.
