Modern Warfare 4 is ditching omnimovement entirely, Infinity Ward confirmed at today's reveal. The system – introduced by Treyarch two years ago with Black Ops 6 – let players move in any direction and chain actions together into elaborate, action-movie-style plays like backwards dives and wall-jump combos. None of that is coming to Modern Warfare 4, which is firmly a boots-on-the-ground shooter.
That doesn't mean the movement will feel sluggish. Infinity Ward told GameSpot the studio's focus was on making Modern Warfare 4's movement "as fast and fluid as possible," and the team specifically called out Modern Warfare 2's restrictive choices – like slowing players down when moving through doors – as something they wanted to fix. Wall jumps are gone, but fluid mantling, sliding, ledge grabbing, and parkour-style movement all stay. The game also adds the ability to climb pipes, opening up new angles in combat. On top of that, players can choose their own prestige progression path, and the campaign is fully playable offline – no internet connection required.
Omnimovement split the Call of Duty community hard. The high-skill movement crowd loved the expressive, technical ceiling it created, but a large chunk of players felt it pushed the series too far from its roots. Modern Warfare has always leaned toward a grittier, more grounded feel compared to Black Ops, so pulling back the movement system makes sense for the sub-series.
Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Last-gen consoles are officially out – PS4 and Xbox One lose Warzone support after Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4. An open beta is planned before launch, with details coming soon.
