Mortal Shell 2 Revered Edition sells out on PS5, fans use it to blast Sony over disc plans

A month before launch, the PS5-exclusive Revered Edition of Mortal Shell 2 has completely sold out of pre-orders, with publisher Playstack apologizing to fans who can no longer secure a copy in their territory. The sellout happened just eight days after pre-orders went live, and with the game releasing on August 20, restocking in time is almost certainly off the table.

Playstack posted on X on July 16 confirming that demand had "exceeded expectations" and that supply across multiple retailers has been fully reserved. The Revered Edition is priced at $70 — $20 more than the $50 digital version — and includes the game on disc, a steelbook case, a 100-plus-page softcover artbook, three fine art prints, and a collector's tuck-in box. The studio was blunt about the restock situation: "Due to Mortal Shell 2's release date of August 20, and the manufacturing time required to replenish stock, there is a very low chance of additional physical copies becoming available before the game's release." They added that any post-launch restock decision isn't theirs to make, and there's no guarantee it happens at all. Copies are already flipping on eBay for well above the sticker price. The standard physical edition at $50 remains available for anyone who just wants a disc without the extras.

The timing couldn't be more pointed. Sony recently confirmed it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games from 2028 onward, a decision that has been generating sustained backlash across PlayStation's social media. Mortal Shell 2 — a sequel to Cold Symmetry's 2020 soulslike, where players swap between different "shells" that alter combat style and playstyle — is a relatively niche double-AA release, which makes the sellout even harder for disc advocates to ignore. Niko Partners research director Daniel Ahmad framed it clearly on X: "This is ultimately how I thought physical media was going to go — limited edition physical disc at a higher price than the standard digital only base game. Granted this is overall a supply issue rather than demand, but it does show this model works and could continue working."

Fans are flooding PlayStation's social posts with the Mortal Shell 2 news as direct evidence against Sony's all-digital direction, though analysts are unanimous that Sony won't reverse course. Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games told IGN that even 500,000 PlayStation Plus cancellations in protest would represent just 1% of Sony's subscriber base — nowhere near enough to shift the math. In the meantime, anyone still wanting a physical copy of Mortal Shell 2 can grab the base disc version, and a Steam open beta is live right now with a Flayed Harbinger skin unlock for players who finish it.
