Nvidia launches free GeForce trading cards, but you'll need to travel or get lucky to grab one

Nvidia just announced a series of collectable trading cards celebrating its GPU history, and the only way to get them is by attending live events or winning community giveaways during what the company is calling the "Summer of RTX". They're free — no cash changes hands — though getting to an event obviously costs travel money.

Series 1 focuses on the GeForce era with a deliberately nostalgic angle, spotlighting older hardware and tech demos like the NV1, GeForce 3, GTX 1080, and the Medusa demo. Nvidia hasn't confirmed how many cards are in the set or how limited the print run will be. The "Series 1" label strongly implies more sets are coming, though whether future waves will carry the same retro charm is an open question — the RTX generation hasn't exactly produced the kind of wild box art and visual identity that made the GTX era memorable.

Nvidia has a history of collector-focused stunts: signed golden GPUs, Jensen Huang's leather jacket auctioned for charity, and now this. The trading card format is a fun left-turn, and the card selection for Series 1 is genuinely well-chosen for anyone who followed PC gaming through the early 2000s.

The comment sections tell a different story, though. The most-liked reaction — "Finally a card I can afford" — sums up the mood. GPU prices have been punishing for years, driven in large part by AI compute demand that Nvidia has profited from enormously. Handing out free collectables while actual graphics cards sit out of reach for many buyers is landing as tone-deaf for a chunk of the community, even if some of the backlash stems from people mistakenly thinking Nvidia is selling the trading cards rather than giving them away.
