Pokémon Unite Is Out of the World Championships Starting 2027

The Pokémon Company has confirmed that Pokémon Unite will be dropped from the Championship Series starting in the 2027 season. The 2026 World Championships in San Francisco next month will be the last time Unite competitors take part in the main event.

Unite won't lose its competitive scene entirely — a standalone in-person event is planned in Japan, with paid travel for qualified teams. Details on qualification and travel support will come later via the Pokémon Unite official site. Elsewhere in the 2027 shakeup, Pokémon Go's World Championships format is switching to 3-on-3 team play, though individual qualification rules stay the same. This year's San Francisco event will also mark the debut of Pokémon Champions as the primary competitive video game at Worlds.

Pokémon Unite launched on Switch and mobile in 2021 as a MOBA spin-off — more approachable than genre heavyweights like Dota 2 and League of Legends, but it never broke through to mainstream popularity the way Pokémon Go or the TCG did. Serebii webmaster Joe Merrick speculates that low enrollment and weak streaming numbers drove the decision. The Unite stream VOD from last year's Worlds pulled around 135,772 views — less than half the view count of the equivalent Scarlet and Violet finals stream from the same event.

The competitive Unite community has kept the game alive for five years with regular roster and meta updates, so the standalone Japan event is at least something. Whether it can sustain a healthy esports scene outside the Championship Series umbrella remains to be seen.
