Pro Jank Footy launches August 12 on PS5 with 150+ power-ups and pure arcade chaos

Pro Jank Footy, an arcade Australian Rules Football game from Adelaide-based developers Powerbomb Games and Tinker Town, launches August 12 on PS5 — with PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 also confirmed. The launch trailer was created by Australian animator and filmmaker Michael Cusack, known for YOLO: Crystal Fantasy, Koala Man, and Smiling Friends.

The game draws direct inspiration from NBA Jam and NHL '94, ditching realism entirely in favour of a power-up system that kicks in every time a player concedes a goal. The losing side picks one of three random power-ups from a pool of over 150, ranging from speed boosts and size increases to score resets, brick walls across the goal posts, portals, a third team joining mid-match, and turning your entire squad into seagulls — or your dad's beat-up sedan. Some power-ups, like Burnt DVD and Where's the Remote?, are deliberately cryptic. Creative Director David Ashby, co-creator of the comedy series Danger 5, designed the system specifically so that losing still feels rewarding. Aunty Donna's Broden Kelly handles in-game commentary, and Korean-Australian animator Hyemin Yoo animated the goal celebration cutscenes. The game supports solo play, couch multiplayer, and online.

Aussie Rules Football has had video game adaptations before, but none that leaned hard into the arcade chaos sensibility that defined the golden age of sports games in the early 90s. The project started as a dare at a fantasy football BBQ in 2024, when entertainment lawyer Cam Rogers — who later joined as producer — challenged Ashby to make a game. The result is a small-team indie that wears its Australian cultural irreverence loudly, with Ashby describing it as "a party game made by a very small and talented team out of Adelaide."

Ashby says the goal is to work as both a love letter for existing footy fans and an accessible entry point for anyone who has never watched a game in their life. With a release just weeks away and a trailer from one of Australia's most recognisable animators attached, Pro Jank Footy is shaping up as one of the more distinctive sports game releases of 2026.
