PUBG Update 42.2 Overhauls Onboarding With 17-Chapter Basic Training Mode

Krafton has shipped PUBG: Battlegrounds update 42.2, and the headline feature is a ground-up rework of how new players learn the game. Basic Training is a 17-chapter mode that walks players through everything from movement and looting to combat and Blue Zone survival, with an NPC partner tagging along throughout to offer real-time guidance.

Beyond the tutorial, the update reworks team communication through a redesigned Message Radial System, making in-match callouts faster and more intuitive. Players can now drop field markers, and three new tabs — Map, Mission, and Match Log — tidy up how in-game information is presented. Arcade mode gets a round of quality-of-life tweaks, and console players gain two new graphics modes: Resolution Priority for a sharper image, and Frame Rate Priority for smoother performance. Maps Taego and Rondo received targeted optimizations, and the update also brings the Contender Glasya, a Fashion Exhibit Lobby, a new Progressive Weapon Skin for the SLR, and the Just Married Survivor Pass.

PUBG: Battlegrounds has been running for nearly a decade — it launched in early access in 2017 and essentially defined the modern battle royale genre before going free-to-play in 2022. Keeping a game that old accessible to newcomers is a genuine challenge, and Krafton has been leaning into it. The studio recently crossed over with Starbreeze's Payday IP for a heist-themed mode, and the game still pulls over 700,000 daily players on Steam alone. Franchise director Taeseok Jang has been candid about how rare that kind of longevity is, pointing to the rapid collapses of Highguard and Concord as cautionary examples.

The onboarding overhaul is a clear signal that Krafton wants to keep the front door open for players who missed the original battle royale wave. Whether a structured 17-chapter tutorial is enough to close the skill gap against veterans who have been playing since 2017 remains to be seen, but it is a more serious attempt than most live-service games bother with.
