Roman Bellic Actor Wants to Know Why GTA 4 Still Has No Remaster

Jason Zumwalt, the actor behind Roman Bellic in Grand Theft Auto 4, has gone on record saying he has no idea why a remaster of the game has never happened — and he'd love to see one. Speaking to Love It Film, Zumwalt said simply: "I would too, I'd love to see it, man. I don't know why they haven't done it."

Zumwalt floated one possible explanation: Screen Actors Guild contracts might be making Rockstar hesitant to revisit the game. Beyond the legal angle, he also made the case that GTA 4 still has the best storyline in the franchise — a personal, grounded narrative that GTA 5 never managed to match. Not everyone agrees; plenty of players see GTA 4 as a product of its era, rough edges and all. Remaster rumors have surfaced periodically over the years, and the most recent report pointed to a current-gen port arriving by the end of 2025 — a date that passed without any announcement from Rockstar.

GTA 4 launched in 2008 and was a critical landmark for the series, praised for its darker tone and the immigrant story of Niko Bellic navigating Liberty City. Unlike GTA 5 — which has been remastered twice, first for PS4 and Xbox One, then again for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, accumulating 230 million lifetime sales — GTA 4 has never received an official refresh. The 2021 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy remaster covered GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, but skipped GTA 4 entirely, leaving fans to wonder whether licensing issues, the SAG angle Zumwalt mentioned, or simply Rockstar's priorities are keeping it shelved.

With GTA 6 launching November 19 on PlayStation and Xbox — following a modern criminal couple, Lucia and Jason Duva, through Vice City — Rockstar's attention is firmly elsewhere for now. Preorders are already open and preloading will be available closer to launch. Whether GTA 4 ever gets its moment in the sun remains an open question, but at least Roman Bellic's actor is asking the same thing fans have been asking for years.
