Sony's decision to kill physical game sales on PS5 is heading to court. The move, which blindsided retailers and consumers alike, has created enough legal exposure that Sony's legal team is expected to stay very busy in the months ahead.

The core issue is straightforward: consumers who bought disc-based PS5 consoles did so with a reasonable expectation that physical games would remain available. Pulling that option raises questions around consumer protection law, false advertising, and the implied contract between hardware manufacturer and buyer. Retailers who stocked physical inventory are also in a difficult position, potentially facing losses on unsold stock they ordered in good faith.
