Sweet Hamster Days lets you live as a pampered hamster — and GTA 5 is partly to blame

Sweet Hamster Days is an FMV game where you play as Hamta, a hamster owned by three doting Japanese sisters who spend most of their screen time gazing lovingly into the camera and pretending to pat you on the head. It's out now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The game was created by a small Japanese studio, with a designer called Oda and project overseer Katayama leading the charge. Katayama's inspiration came from two unlikely places: a part-time job wearing mascot costumes, where he noticed that children and elderly people who would normally keep their distance suddenly warmed up to him while he was in costume, and Grand Theft Auto 5. "I'm a big fan of Grand Theft Auto 5, where you switch between three protagonists as you progress," Katayama said. "As I was having fun switching between the lives of other people, lives that weren't my own, I had this idea that it might be nice to have a hamster as one of the options instead of a human." The studio is calling it a "being-taken-care-of adventure game" — a completely unprecedented genre, by their own admission. The game also leans into the classic isekai setup: your character is reincarnated as Hamta after a run-in with the infamous Truck-kun.

The broader context here is a genuine FMV dating sim boom across Asia. Oda noted that Katayama flagged the rising popularity of live-action games in China, and recent hits like the Road to Empress series from China and Five Hearts Under One Roof from Korea back that up. A Japanese studio jumping into the space makes commercial sense — making your protagonist a hamster is just one way to carve out a niche. The game did hit a snag before launch: Steam initially rejected it, likely due to Valve's stricter policies around sexually explicit content featuring real people, though the exact reason was never confirmed. After tweaking age rating settings and resubmitting, it was approved.

Sweet Hamster Days is available now on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Whether the FMV hamster-pampering genre catches on beyond this one title remains to be seen, but the game has already cleared the bar of existing, which is more than most deeply strange ideas manage.
