Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon — the Arthurian open-world RPG that draws heavy comparisons to Skyrim — is currently 50% off on Steam, the lowest price it's been since launch. The update adds new items, a new "ultra+" graphics preset aimed at high-end PCs, new armor sets for rangers and sorcerers, new bows and wands, and apparently a new romance option. The game runs on Steam Deck too, sitting around 30–45fps — playable, if not silky. A free demo is available on Steam if you want to try before committing. The reviewer at PC Gamer called it a game that "puts an interesting spin on Arthurian legend and presents a competent world that plays like a love letter to the open-world first-person RPG genre."

Tainted Grail launched in May 2024 after a period in early access, developed by a relatively young studio. It's set entirely on the island of Avalon across three distinct zones — closer in structure to Avowed than to Skyrim's single seamless world. Beyond the main RPG loop of dungeon crawling and morally ambiguous choices, it packs in fishing, farming, cooking, mining, smithing, spell mixing, and journal sketching. Visually it lands somewhere between Dark Souls and Morrowind — darker and grittier than Skyrim — and the melee combat is notably more refined than Bethesda's 2011 classic. With Elder Scrolls 6 still years out, it's one of the very few games genuinely scratching that itch.

Community reception has been positive since launch, and the timing of a half-price sale alongside new free content should bring in a fresh wave of players. If you've been waiting for a reason to jump in, this is probably it.
