Todd Howard admits he's a Reddit lurker and steals ideas from it

Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard dropped into r/Games last week to confirm what many suspected — he reads Reddit constantly and isn't shy about mining it for ideas.

Howard made only his second public comment on the site in three years, posting under a thread where Bethesda had just shared a broad update on everything the studio is currently working on. The timing followed Xbox's high-profile layoffs. "Hey Reddit. I'm a professional lurker and read your comments all the time. Many here do and we deeply appreciate the passion for our work," Howard wrote, adding that the studio is "constantly listening." He then went further: "You'd be surprised how many great ideas I get from Reddit. So upvote and we'll do it. Maybe."

Howard has always projected an image of someone who stays close to the player community, and Bethesda games — from Skyrim to Fallout 4 — have long had a feedback loop with their fanbases through modding and community discussion. Reddit has become one of the loudest venues for that conversation, so it's not shocking that someone at the top is paying attention. What's less clear is exactly which subreddits he's haunting and which specific ideas have made it from a comment thread into an actual Bethesda game.

The post raised obvious questions about what "great ideas" have actually made the jump from upvoted Reddit comments to real design decisions — and whether Howard showing up in the comments at all was a spontaneous gesture or a carefully timed PR move following the Xbox layoff news.
