University of Silicon Valley offers up to $15K in scholarships for rare gaming achievements

The University of Silicon Valley has launched the Max Achievement Scholarship — a program that hands out real tuition money to students who can prove they've earned rare, difficult in-game achievements. It's the first year the scholarship is running, with USV aiming to reward 10 to 15 students during the 2026–2027 academic year.

The scholarship splits into two tiers. Mastery awards up to $2,500 per term, and Legendary pays out up to $5,000 per term — across three terms per year, that's a potential $15,000 annually for top-tier applicants. Qualifying games span a wide range of genres: MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XIV and Old School RuneScape, roguelikes like Hades and Risk of Rain 2, and sandbox titles like Minecraft, among others. The bar is genuinely high — Old School RuneScape's Mastery example is the Max Cape, which requires maxing all 24 skills to level 99. For Final Fantasy XIV's Legendary tier, players need every combat job and every crafter and gatherer job leveled to 100. Students whose game of choice isn't on the official list can still apply, provided they document the achievement's rarity — specifically a sub-5% completion rate — and explain the mastery it represents. The scholarship committee reviews those on a case-by-case basis.

USV frames the whole thing less as a gaming gimmick and more as a recognition of transferable skills. The university argues these achievements demonstrate "disciplined practice, strategic problem-solving, and the pursuit of mastery beyond minimum requirements" — qualities it directly ties to its academic pillars like Systems Thinking and Engineering, Computational Fluency, and Agentic AI Collaboration. It's an unusual pitch, but not entirely without precedent in terms of universities grabbing attention with unconventional programs — the University of Glasgow went viral in 2021 for a philosophy course built around The Simpsons.

Whether the program expands beyond its pilot year depends on applicant quality and overall success, according to USV. Given the internet attention it's already generating, the scholarship committee may have more submissions to review than they initially expected.
