Ryu Ga Gotoku – the studio behind Like a Dragon – is building Virtua Fighter Crossroads as what it calls a cinematic narrative fighting game. That's not a beefed-up story mode bolted onto a versus roster like Street Fighter 6's World Tour or Tekken 8's The Dark Awakens. RGG wants to fuse what it does best – storytelling – with what Virtua Fighter does best – fighting gameplay – into something neither franchise has attempted before. VF producer Riichiro Yamada and IP head Toshihiro Nakaya laid out the vision at a Summer Game Fest roundtable.
Crossroads is set ten years after Virtua Fighter 5. The Judgment 6 conglomerate is gone, the world tournament no longer exists, and the Dural Project – the android super-weapon program built on stolen fighting data – is finished. The story follows four new protagonists, though only two have been revealed so far: Cielo, an MMA fighter who's been front and center in the trailers, and Stella Bridge, a kickboxer who looks a lot like series mainstay Sarah Bryant but isn't her. The other two protagonists will be revealed before launch. Yamada said the team faced a binary choice: scrap the old lore entirely or reshape it into something new. They chose the latter.
Not every legacy fighter is coming back, and the reason is intentional. With a ten-year time jump, veterans like Lau Chan and Shun Di might simply be dead within the world RGG is constructing. The character design philosophy has also shifted: in the old days, the team would design a moveset and build a character around it. Now the question is whether a character actually fits this world. Nayaka used Cielo as the example – Vanessa already covers MMA-style striking, but Cielo exists because his story and personality belong in this setting, not because the roster needed another striker.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads is one of the most ambitious bets in the fighting game genre in years. RGG is wagering that players want a real narrative alongside the combat, and that's a risk most fighting game studios haven't been willing to take.
