Worms creator Andy Davidson has released Worms: The Director's Cut 1.5 — a free, unofficial but Team 17-approved expansion for the Amiga-exclusive sequel — to mark the series' 30th anniversary. You can download it right now at no cost.
The expansion packs in over 40 custom levels, 50 new voice sample packs, new teams, and new terrain types. It's a collaborative effort with fan creators and indie legend Jeff Minter, who got his own Llamasoft-themed level as a tribute. Davidson told journalist Daryl Baxter that the whole thing is a celebration of the Amiga platform: "The expansion pack is a chance for people to enjoy the full package of DC, with all it could do. Rather than closing a chapter, I hope it gives the game a new lease on life." He also confirmed that work is underway on a dedicated site where players can share custom levels.
Worms: The Director's Cut originally launched as an Amiga exclusive and never made the jump to modern platforms — a sharp contrast to the mainline series, which has spawned sequels and spinoffs right up to 2025's Apple Arcade release Worms Across Worlds. Davidson noted on X that the expansion works fine with emulators for anyone without original hardware. Revisiting three-decade-old code wasn't easy, though: "Going back to the original code did prove much more difficult than I imagined. There was a lot I just didn't remember three decades on, and scrolling through the code I did wonder how I managed it all in the first place!"
Davidson called Director's Cut the version of Worms he's most proud of — "it's when the gameplay and humour really clicked" — and the expansion feels less like a farewell and more like an open invitation for a new audience to finally discover it.
