World of Warcraft: Forever, announced at BlizzCon 2026, is adding brand-new zones to classic Azeroth while chasing one very specific goal: players shouldn't be able to tell whether those zones were always there. Senior art director Jeff Parrott and senior game designer Josh Greenfield spoke to GameSpot about how Blizzard is pulling that off.
Forever introduces four new zones — the Riverglades, Mount Hjyal, Shen'dralas, and Zephras Isle — all designed to feel like they belong in 2004-era WoW. Parrott said the team dug deep into vanilla WoW's design language, studying how zones flowed, how quests moved players through them, and what made that era feel distinct. Riverglades is his go-to example: "It does feel extremely of that era, of that time." The target, he said, is for a player to walk in and think, "Did this exist?" — and genuinely not be sure. Greenfield put it more bluntly: "The temporary Mandela Effect. It's like, 'I'm pretty sure this was there.' 'No, it wasn't.' 'I'm pretty sure it was.' It's great."
The same philosophy drives Forever's visual overhaul of old Azeroth. New rendering tech improves lighting, water, and fog across the entire world — Duskwood is darker and moodier, night elf zones have sunlight filtering through forest canopies. Crucially, Blizzard isn't trying to recreate how vanilla WoW actually looked; it's trying to recreate how players remember it looking. Greenfield quoted Parrott's internal mantra directly: "Not necessarily WoW the way it actually looked, but the way you remember it." The idea is that the upgraded visuals should feel like confirmation of a memory rather than a replacement of one. World of Warcraft launched in 2004 and has gone through multiple expansion cycles since — Forever appears to be Blizzard's attempt to give the classic game a definitive, modernized home without stripping away what made it iconic.
Forever's closed beta is live now, with the full launch set for November 4. The game ships with over 1,000 new quests and full controller support. Class changes are coming, but Blizzard has already confirmed that Shaman and Warlock tanks are not on the table.
