Activision is killing Modern Warfare 2 and MW3 leaderboards ahead of MW4 launch

Activision has announced that leaderboards and combat records for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023) will be permanently disabled ahead of Modern Warfare 4's release on October 23. The stated reason is optimizing backend services in preparation for the new game — a vague explanation that has left fans frustrated and confused.

Activision hasn't elaborated beyond that single line about backend optimization, and GameSpot has reached out for more detail. The community isn't buying the justification — players on social media responded with the "no correlation" SpongeBob meme, questioning what older game leaderboards have to do with launching a new title. Others raised a broader concern: if stats from MW2 and MW3 can just disappear, why invest time and money into MW4 knowing the same could happen down the line. Reddit users were less surprised, noting that the leaderboards and combat records in question have reportedly been broken for years anyway, making the "permanent disable" feel more like a formal acknowledgment of something already dead.

Call of Duty has long operated as a live-service franchise where older entries get progressively deprioritized once a new annual release arrives. Infinity Ward led development on MW2 (2022), assisted Sledgehammer on MW3 (2023), and is back as lead developer on MW4 — with support from Activision's wider studio network, as is standard for the series. The decision to sunset features in older titles isn't new for the franchise, but permanently wiping competitive records is a more visible and personal cut than simply reducing server support.
