Call of Duty Ambience lets you fall asleep to MW2 and Black Ops lobby chaos

Developer Mike Wing has built Call of Duty Ambience, a free web app that streams looping recordings of old-school CoD voice chat lobbies — complete with an Xbox 360-style dashboard, cringy gamertags, and all the mic-bleed chaos you remember. Wing announced it on X on July 16, 2026, with a pitch that doubles as the app description: "Most people fall asleep to white noise. I fall asleep to grown men arguing in CoD lobbies."

Three games are currently supported: Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and Black Ops 2. The interface mimics the Xbox 360 dashboard, sound effects included, and lets you click around — though only the back button actually does anything. The recordings themselves deliver exactly what the era promised: slurs, colourful insults, strange anecdotes, and the constant hiss of badly calibrated microphones.

Call of Duty's persistent lobbies — rooms that kept the same players together between matches — were a defining feature of the MW2 and Black Ops era, roughly 2009 to 2012. That social layer, feuds and all, quietly disappeared as the series moved toward faster matchmaking and disbanding lobbies after each game. Last year's Black Ops 7 made a partial attempt to revive the format, but the organic chaos of the old days hasn't really come back. The recently released Black Ops 1 and 2 ports for PS4 and PS5 have given some players a taste of that era again, though those ports have had their own issues.

Wing has form for this kind of nostalgia-bait: his other projects on AppDrop include a Steam Sale Simulator and an Xbox 360 Messenger app. Call of Duty Ambience is available now on AppDrop for anyone who wants to test whether lobby rage really is more soothing than rain sounds.
