AI slop is flooding Skyrim's mod scene — even the sexy ones

Skyrim's modding community is drowning in AI-generated content, and it's getting harder to avoid. Since LLM-powered "vibe coding" tools lowered the barrier to entry, Nexus Mods has seen a surge of slick-looking mods with confident descriptions promising dramatic overhauls — most of which barely work, or don't work at all, once downloaded.

The problem cuts across every corner of the mod scene, including adult content. One example making the rounds is a mod that generates naked 3D characters during loading screens — low-effort stuff, but it pulls downloads because the thumbnail is eye-catching. A modder on Reddit described the frustration directly: they spent months building a follower mod with over 1,000 lines of self-recorded dialogue, only to watch a competing mod with 52 lines of AI-generated voice acting and a half-naked thumbnail rack up four times the downloads in the same hour. "Shit's rough," they wrote in January 2026. One particularly prolific creator has reportedly been pumping out dozens of mods per week throughout 2026, though only a fraction stick around long-term.

Nexus Mods addressed AI content back in 2023, ruling that AI-generated mods are allowed as long as they don't violate copyright. Authors can tag their mods as AI-generated, but the tag is buried — users have to click into the mod page to see it, and creators can skip the tag entirely. That policy hasn't changed, and as the tools have improved, the volume has only grown.

Some experienced users say it's manageable — they can spot AI art, block repeat offenders, and move on. But the constant vigilance is wearing thin, and legitimate mod creators are the ones absorbing the cost. When a months-long project gets buried under a wave of thumbnail-optimized slop on launch day, the incentive to keep making quality work takes a real hit.
