Analysts Say PS Plus Cancellations Won't Force Sony to Reverse Its All-Digital Decision

PS5 owners are cancelling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions to protest Sony's decision to go all-digital, but industry analysts say the gesture won't move the needle. Sony announced that all new PS5 games will stop releasing on physical disc from January 2028 onwards — a policy almost certain to carry over to PS6. A petition calling on Sony to reverse the decision has crossed 200,000 signatures, and players have been sharing screenshots of cancelled PS Plus subscriptions on social media.

Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Japanese game industry consultancy Kantan Games, told IGN the math simply doesn't work in protesters' favor. Sony has over 120 million active PlayStation users and around 50 million PS Plus subscribers. Even if 500,000 people cancelled in protest, that's just 1% of the subscription business. "I sympathize with physical media fans, but Sony will not reverse this decision," Toto said. "They of course knew what the online reaction would look like, and they now wait for this storm to pass." He also pointed to Sony's weak profit margins as a key driver: digital sales eliminate manufacturing and distribution costs, cut retailers out of the equation entirely, and let Sony keep 100% of first-party revenue versus roughly 65% on physical copies. For third-party titles, Sony earns around 30% on digital sales compared to a licensing fee of roughly 15% on physical.

Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners, offered a slightly softer read. He expects Sony to respond in some capacity given the scale of the backlash, but stopped well short of predicting a full reversal. "I'd be surprised if they do a full reversal at this point," Ahmad wrote on X. He also noted Sony probably shouldn't have announced the move before it was ready to explain how physical discs would work on PS6. The economics of digital are well understood across the industry — digital downloads already dominate game sales broadly, and platform holders like Sony capture significantly higher margins than they ever could through retail.

Meanwhile, Sony is reportedly offering discounts to subscribers who try to cancel, a classic retention tactic that suggests the company is watching churn numbers even if it isn't changing course. The community backlash remains loud, but with analysts united in saying a reversal is off the table, the protest appears to be more about sending a message than forcing a policy change.
