Bohemia Interactive is marking 25 years of Operation Flashpoint — now officially titled ArmA: Cold War Assault — with a remastered edition and a full release of the original Poseidon engine source code on GitHub.
The remaster rebuilds the Poseidon engine with widescreen support and improved compatibility for modern hardware. The full remaster isn't out yet, but a playable demo is available, described as a self-contained slice of the game that also doubles as a sanctioned asset pack — fans are free to study, modify, and build new Arma content from it. On the code side, Bohemia has pushed the full engine source to GitHub, modernized to C++20, built with CMake and Clang, and with cross-platform support for Windows x64 and Linux x64. The license explicitly excludes the ArmA and Operation Flashpoint trademarks and logos, so any engine fork needs to brand itself separately — but beyond that, modders and programmers can use the code however they like.
Operation Flashpoint launched in June 2001 as one of the earliest military simulators, letting players drive tanks, fly helicopters, and command squads across large open islands at a time when most shooters were still corridor-bound. The name "Operation Flashpoint" is no longer Bohemia's — that trademark ended up with Codemasters, who used it for an unrelated series before it quietly died. The game has lived on as ArmA: Cold War Assault, and its Cold War setting remains a touchstone for the series. Bohemia has already revisited some of its locations — including the island of Everon — in ArmA Reforger, which runs on the studio's current engine and serves as a development platform for ArmA 4, currently targeting a 2027 release.
The demo and source code are available now, with the full remaster still to come. For a 25-year-old game that essentially invented a genre, it's a generous anniversary package — and handing the engine to the community could produce some genuinely interesting projects.
