Brigandine Abyss preview: cult strategy RPG returns with Fire Emblem vibes

Brigandine Abyss, the fourth entry in the long-running strategy RPG series, is nearly here — launching August 26 on Windows PC and August 27 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.

The series has a sparse release history: the original Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena hit PlayStation in 1998, followed by a remake in 2000, and then a 20-year gap before Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia arrived. Abyss is only the second wholly original entry in over two decades. The preview impressions come from hands-on time with the Windows PC demo, supplemented by an online preview event hosted by NIS America, where the publisher walked through features not included in the demo build.

Brigandine has always occupied a niche but devoted corner of the strategy RPG genre — closer to grand-strategy titles with unit-based combat than the grid-focused approach of Fire Emblem, though Abyss apparently draws enough inspiration from that series to earn the comparison. NIS America, which has published the series in the West, is positioning this as a return for lapsed fans and a potential entry point for players who missed the earlier games.
