Call of Duty movie is set in the Modern Warfare universe, director confirms

Director Peter Berg confirmed at Fanatics Fest in New York City that the upcoming Call of Duty movie will be set in the Modern Warfare universe. The film, a joint production from Paramount Pictures and Activision, is still on track for a theatrical release on June 30, 2028.

Berg made the announcement alongside co-writer Taylor Sheridan during a Call of Duty in Culture Panel at the event. Beyond the universe setting, no plot details or cast members have been revealed. Activision head and film producer Rob Kostich previously said the team was committed to authenticity: "we were only going to make a movie if it's right" and wanted to "infuse that with epic scope" while keeping things grounded on a human level.

The Modern Warfare sub-series is the longest-running and most recognizable branch of Call of Duty, dating back to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007. That game shifted the franchise away from World War II settings and introduced iconic characters like Soap, Ghost, Captain Price, and villain Vladimir Makarov — figures who have carried through multiple sequels and a full reboot cycle starting with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2019. The series is still actively expanding: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is due October 23, 2026 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Why Paramount and Activision chose Modern Warfare over the Black Ops series — which just landed new PS4 and PS5 ports — remains unexplained.

Whether the film will retell events fans already know from the games or chart new territory in the same universe is still an open question. With two years until release and no cast announced, there's plenty of time for those details to surface — but for now, the Modern Warfare setting is all Berg is giving away.
