A cinematic believed to be the opening scene of the canceled mobile game Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link surfaced online over the weekend, and the Kingdom Hearts community is already picking it apart for clues about where Kingdom Hearts IV is headed. Square Enix had positioned Missing-Link as a meaningful piece of the ongoing saga, with characters from the game explicitly set to appear in Kingdom Hearts IV — so even though the game is dead, its story threads may still feed into the next mainline entry.

The clip shows a squad of keyblade wielders in what fans are describing as astronaut or deep-sea diver suits, battling a massive Heartless inside what looks like a dark, isolated distortion. The leading theory is that these suits are a sci-fi evolution of the Keyblade Armor seen in earlier games — the fantasy knight gear characters wore to survive the Lanes Between, where concentrated dark energy made unprotected travel lethal. Missing-Link was set to follow the first expeditioners venturing into the Astral Plane from Scala ad Caelum, the lore-established origin point of all Kingdom Hearts worlds, which fits neatly with what the clip appears to show. After the Heartless is defeated, the scene cuts to Quadratum — the hyper-realistic Tokyo-inspired world that has been central to Kingdom Hearts IV's promotional material.

Fans are also reading the opening imagery as a deliberate callback to the Dive to the Heart sequences that open Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, where Sora and Roxas fall through water into a symbolic inner realm. The key difference: Sora fell in by accident, but these suited figures enter the water deliberately, tethered to something, suggesting a structured mission rather than a narrative accident. That detail has sparked speculation about whether Sora's original connection to Quadratum was more intentional than it appeared. Two characters are also partially identifiable in the footage — Brain, who debuted in Kingdom Hearts Union X, and Sigurd, a figure who had been kept visually obscured in the mobile game. This appears to be one of the first clear looks at Sigurd's face, and it lines up with a new character seen in Kingdom Hearts IV trailers.

With Missing-Link officially canceled, Square Enix hasn't said how — or whether — its story will be folded into Kingdom Hearts IV or another release. Given the franchise's history of spreading essential lore across spin-offs, handhelds, and mobile games, the community isn't ruling out that the cinematic's plot points will resurface somewhere.
