ConcernedApe breaks silence on Haunted Chocolatier: 'I would rather serve a fully baked bread'

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone posted a new development update on Haunted Chocolatier this week — his first in nearly six months — admitting the game is taking a long time and explaining why he's shown almost nothing of it publicly.

The update centers on the recipe book mechanic, a core UI players will use constantly to craft chocolates. Barone says he's been iterating on it repeatedly, chasing the right balance of information density — enough data to be useful, not so much it overwhelms. That obsessive polish is his explanation for the radio silence on screenshots and gameplay clips too. "Partly, it feels like I'm serving a half-baked bread. I would rather serve a fully baked bread," Barone wrote. "I know that many parts of the game will likely evolve and change before release, so if I reveal them early, I risk disappointing players if the final product does not match their expectations." He describes himself and his team as currently "knee-deep" in development.

Haunted Chocolatier was announced in 2021 as a spiritual successor to Stardew Valley — the farming sim Barone built solo over four years that became one of the best-selling indie games ever. The new game shifts the setting to a haunted chocolate shop, blending cozy crafting with a spookier atmosphere. Barone floated a rough five-year window in 2025 but has since walked that back, with his January update making his position clear: "The game will come out when it's done." No release window is currently attached to the project.

Fan patience is clearly being tested — Polygon noted a prior piece from March literally asking the community to stop pressuring Barone for updates. The new post is a reassurance more than a reveal, but the detail about the recipe book at least confirms active, iterative work is happening. Until Barone decides the bread is baked, don't expect a release date.
