CS2 Tracker's slur leaderboard is now a competition, and Valve isn't doing anything about it

A new Slurs Tracking feature on CS2 Tracker has backfired badly — players are now deliberately flooding in-game chat with racist and homophobic slurs just to rank on the leaderboard. In just two days, the situation has gone from bad to worse.

When Kotaku first covered the feature two days ago, most of the top 25 players in categories tracking the n-word, r-word, and f-slur had fewer than 100 individual instances logged. As of now, the minimum count to even appear in the n-word category has jumped to 976. CS2 content creator Thour put it plainly: "People are becoming increasingly racist and abusive in CS2 just to climb a leaderboard that tracks the number of abusive messages they post in chat." Browsing the publicly available chat logs of top-ranked users confirms it — one player sitting third in the n-word category wrote in chat that they "gotta get on the slur leaderboard number 1."

None of this is surprising given how little Valve has done to moderate Counter-Strike 2's chat since launch. The game's language filtering is essentially nonexistent for actual slurs — the only detectable text moderation appears to target links to third-party skin marketplaces like CS2Float, not hate speech. It's part of a broader pattern: CS2 has also been struggling with a surge in wall-hack and aimbot cheating, and players have been loudly criticizing Valve for failing to ban cheaters at any meaningful scale. The game's anti-cheat and moderation infrastructure have both been sore points for the community for months.

Kotaku reached out to Valve for comment but received no reply before publication. Until Valve actually steps in — whether through chat filters, automated bans, or any form of active moderation — the leaderboard will keep doing exactly what leaderboards do: motivate people to top it, no matter the cost.
