Cyberpunk 2077 hits 100K Steam players again and fans are begging CD Projekt for more DLC

Cyberpunk 2077 is riding a fresh wave of popularity — Steam peak concurrent players cracked 100,000 on July 5 for the first time since 2023, driven by a recent sale, hype around the upcoming Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, and a crossover with Wuthering Waves. Fans are using the moment to loudly demand more DLC from CD Projekt, even though the studio has already said no.

The numbers back up the enthusiasm. CD Projekt confirmed earlier this month that Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold 40 million copies since its December 2020 launch — up 5 million from November 2025. The game has had one expansion, Phantom Liberty, released in 2023 with Idris Elba in a starring role. In May, CD Projekt stated it has "no plans" for further DLC or expansions, pointing players toward Cyberpunk 2 as the next stop in Night City. The problem: Cyberpunk 2 is still a long way off. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has suggested it won't arrive until at least 2030, and it's further behind in development than The Witcher 4.

The comparison to The Witcher 3 is what's really stinging fans right now. CD Projekt recently confirmed new DLC for that 11-year-old game, and Cyberpunk players are not taking the contrast quietly. A Reddit thread titled "Yeah, we are gonna need that second DLC CDPR!" has racked up 12,000 upvotes. "It's a slap in the face The Witcher 3 is getting another DLC," one commenter wrote, questioning why a game with already extensive DLC support keeps getting more while the newer title gets nothing. Others are more wistful — one player described finishing a 220-hour first playthrough and saying they'd take new DLC "in a second" despite it wrecking their backlog plans. Another called Cyberpunk 2077 "one of the saddest cases of cut content" and said they've spent more time looking outside the map and researching cut material than in any other game. Pawel Sasko, associate game director on Cyberpunk 2, acknowledged the surge with a warm message on social media but stopped well short of hinting at new content.

Some fans are holding out hope that CD Projekt will eventually follow the Witcher 3 playbook and announce Cyberpunk 2077 DLC closer to the launch of a new Cyberpunk title — after all, The Witcher 3's new DLC also came out of nowhere after years of silence. For now, the official position remains firm: nothing is in development. Whether that changes as Cyberpunk 2's release window draws closer remains to be seen.
