Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2.5D brawler was in development at WayForward, but its fate is unknown

CD Projekt Red and WayForward — the studio behind Shantae, Double Dragon Neon, and River City Girls — were reportedly collaborating on an unannounced Cyberpunk Edgerunners game. The project, codenamed Gemini, was described as a "rollback-driven 2.5D brawler" and was said to be in very early R&D. Details surfaced from the portfolio of a former WayForward developer, whose identity was withheld.

Gemini was reportedly in development at WayForward between 2025 and 2026. The concept fits WayForward's wheelhouse — the studio has a long track record with side-scrolling brawlers and beat 'em ups, and Edgerunners' heavily stylised anime aesthetic maps naturally onto that genre. References to "rollback-safe architecture" and "online transport integration" suggest the game was being designed with online multiplayer from the ground up. MP1st, which broke the story, was unable to confirm the project's current status, but noted separate findings that WayForward was working on an Unreal Engine 5-powered project last year — one that reportedly hit funding delays, stalled in development, and led to layoffs after a vertical slice was delivered.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners — the Netflix anime based on CD Projekt Red's open-world RPG — was a breakout hit when it launched in 2022, and it visibly reinvigorated player interest in Cyberpunk 2077 at the time. CD Projekt Red has since rebranded as CD Projekt Red (dropping the parent company separation), and the Cyberpunk universe is staying active on multiple fronts: Edgerunners Season 2 is on the way, a Cyberpunk trading card game has been announced, and the full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is in development, though still far off. The studio is also returning to The Witcher with both a Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4 in the pipeline.

No official comment has come from either CD Projekt Red or WayForward, so Gemini remains unconfirmed and its current status is genuinely unclear. Whether it was quietly shelved alongside those reported layoffs or is still alive in some form is an open question.
