Dave Bautista confirmed as Kratos in Amazon's God of War series after Ryan Hurst injury

Dave Bautista is officially the new Kratos in Amazon's God of War TV series. Variety confirmed the casting after weeks of rumors, with the former WWE star and Guardians of the Galaxy actor set to head to Vancouver as filming resumes in a few weeks.

Bautista replaces Ryan Hurst, who had to step down after tearing his bicep during a stunt — an injury serious enough to require surgery and rule him out of the production entirely. Hurst had already undergone a significant physical transformation for the role, reportedly putting on 40 pounds of muscle, but the injury forced a recasting after four episodes had already been filmed. That means the production now has to reshoot all of Kratos's completed scenes with Bautista in the lead. Filming had originally started in February in Vancouver and is expected to continue there. No other cast members from season one have been recast, though the show is reportedly looking for older actors to play Atreus and Thrud ahead of season two — which is expected to begin shooting almost immediately after season one wraps.

The series covers the story of the 2018 God of War game and its sequel Ragnarök, following Kratos and his son Atreus through Norse mythology. It's written by Ronald D. Moore, the Battlestar Galactica creator who more recently produced the Apple TV+ hit For All Mankind. Bautista is a physically credible fit for Kratos, though some observers have noted he's leaned out considerably in recent years. His breakout dramatic role as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films showed he can hold his own on screen, and the internet has already surfaced a fun detail: the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special includes a scene where a tourist calls Drax "the god of war."

Community reaction is mixed but largely positive on the casting itself. The production has had a rocky road — Hurst's initial reveal drew mockery for his physique, then sympathy after he posted transformation photos, then the injury ended his run entirely. With reshoots required and season two casting already in motion, a 2027 release on Amazon Prime looks optimistic at best.
