D&D: Honor Among Thieves sequel has a script but financial reality may kill it

Co-director Jonathan Goldstein confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that a sequel script for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves already exists — but he's openly skeptical it will ever get made, citing "financial reasons" as the main obstacle.

Goldstein told ScreenRant that he and his co-director were hired to write the follow-up. "We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons and Dragons," he said. "I don't know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They're expensive movies to make, but it'd be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like." The financial concern almost certainly points to the original film's box office performance — Honor Among Thieves opened at number one domestically but finished with $205.46 million globally against a reported $150 million production budget, before marketing costs are even factored in. That math leaves little room for optimism at a studio level.

Honor Among Thieves landed in 2023 to strong critical and audience reception — 91% from critics and 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes — and built a dedicated fanbase around its cast of Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, and Regé-Jean Page. The film was widely praised for threading the needle between fan service and accessibility, something genuinely difficult to pull off with a property as sprawling as D&D. Former Paramount CEO Brian Robbins had previously said a sequel was possible, but only if it could be made cheaper. Pine himself said in 2023 he was "pretty confident" a second film would happen eventually.

With Paramount navigating its own corporate turbulence and no greenlight in sight, the sequel exists as a script and not much else right now. Goldstein's comments are honest rather than hopeful — a sequel script sitting in a drawer is a long way from cameras rolling.
