D&D's Arcana Unleashed brings back big adventure campaigns for 5.5e

Wizards of the Coast has announced Arcana Unleashed, the next major D&D 5.5e release, launching in September as part of the Season of Magic. It pairs a player and DM expansion book with Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a full adventure campaign set in Thay — the first large-scale adventure the current edition has seen.

The core Arcana Unleashed book focuses on high magic, covering new spellcasting options, evolving magic items, arcane factions, and world-shaping magical threats. Deadfall is a 128-page adventure for characters levels 11–20, spanning 10 levels of progression and pitched as a magical spy thriller. Players navigate Thay's deadly political landscape, where a single misstep means death, and the endgame is a confrontation with the lich Szass Tam, the country's immortal ruler. Both products are available separately or bundled with an Arcana Unleashed Map Pack.

The announcement matters because large adventure campaigns — Curse of Strahd, Descent into Avernus, Rime of the Frostmaiden — were a defining feature of 5e and a major driver of that edition's mainstream success. Deadfall is shorter than those classics at 128 pages versus the 250–300 pages those adventures ran, but the scope in terms of character progression is comparable. The subclasses in the core book are expected to be finalized versions of the arcane subclasses that appeared in the 2025 Unearthed Arcana playtest document.

If you want an early look at the new rules in action, the second season of Dungeon Masters — the official D&D actual play show — started airing July 8 on the D&D YouTube channel, with DM Jasmine Bhullar leading cast members Devora Wilde, Neil Newbon, Mayanna Berrin, and Christian Navarro through an Arcana Unleashed campaign. Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall is effectively 5.5e's first real stress test for the kind of product that made its predecessor the most popular edition of D&D ever released.
